Allison Drew
Allison Drew teaches in the Department of Politics at the University
of York. She obtained an MA in African Area Studies, an MA in
Political
Science and a PhD in Political Science from the University of
California,
Los Angeles.
Her work examines the dynamics between African states and
social movements and their imperial metropoles. Much of her research
focusses on the movement for democracy in South Africa, especially the
changing relationship between socialism, nationalism and the state and
the interactions between national and international movements. Her
current project, Visions of
Liberation: Communism and Nationalism in Algeria and South Africa,
has been funded by the British Academy and
the Arts and Humanities Research Council.
She would welcome enquiries from those interested in postgraduate
research in African politics, South African history and politics,
Communist and socialist history and comparative women’s movements.

In York the J B Morrell Library contains considerable holdings on
Southern African politics and history. The Raymond Burton Humanities
Research Library houses the Borthwick Institute for Archives, which
contains the Southern African Archives, and the library has significant
microfilm holdings. Students undertaking research degrees will also
want to take advantage of nearby resources, such as the
British Library Lending Division at Boston Spa, the Brotherton Library
in Leeds and the John Rylands Library and People’s History Museum in
Manchester.
