Misunderstandings between pilots and air-traffic controllers are counted in a field study. Each shift worked by a controller is divided into two equal parts and the mean number of misunderstandings per hour in each part computed for each controller over a 1 month period. It is expected that more misunderstandings will occur in the later part of the shift because the controller is tired.
