Driving to and parking on campus

Directions

The easiest way to campus if travelling from outside the city is to turn in towards York from the A64 at the junction with the A1079 Hull Road. From there just look out for signs to the left for the University to bring you onto campus.

Parking

Car parks at the University are marked on the maps linked from the maps page. Parking is limited though, so use public transport if you can.

The University's parking information pages include details about parking charges and updates about campus works affecting parking.

Email

Access your email

There are three main ways to see your email on the move:

1. Direct connection

Configuring your phone's built-in email app makes receiving and sending easy.

IT Services provide generic instructions for setting up access to email on any device. It might look a bit technical, but it's easy and well worth it.

The basic settings are:

Incoming mail

Outgoing mail

With those details saved, email should start appearing on your phone straight away.

For troubleshooting, contact IT Services.

2. Forward mail to your personal account

If you already have your personal email set up on your phone and you can't set up multiple accounts, you might want to just forward your university email to your personal account.

Email forwarding means all your messages are just passed on to your personal account - similar to when you forward a message to a friend.

Setting up email forwarding is as easy as logging in to My IT Account and choosing where mail should go.

3. Use webmail

If you really don't want to do either of the above, webmail is available in your browser.

Webmail isn't designed for mobile though, so choose option 1 or 2 above if you have the choice.

Files

Access files

The easiest way to get to your files from your phone is via the Web VPN.

Go to webvpn.york.ac.uk, log in and choose 'File browsing' - you should see your files!

Note that via the Web VPN you can look at but not necessarily save or edit your files - your phone type will determine this.

Top tip: Map network drives

When you access your files using the Web VPN, by default you see just your main filestore area, but you can add to this. If you have shared network filestore, perhaps for your office or a project team, you can add it.

To access shared filestore on your mobile:

Support

IT Services provide documentation on accessing your files from off campus

You can contact IT Services at itsupport@york.ac.uk, on 01904 323838 or as @uoyitservices on Twitter.

Unofficially mobile

The site uses publicly available University of York data and links to University resources, but it is not an official University site.

Compatibility

The site should work on any modern smartphone.

It uses jQuery Mobile which is still in development, so there may be are a few bugs. Let me know if you find any.

Feedback

I'm @danwiggle on Twitter and dan.wiggle@gmail.com on email; feel free to get in touch.

I work in the University's Web Office but this is just a pet project out of hours.

What's next?

The site is pretty basic right now. A few additions may follow:

Beyond that, we'll see what happens...

iPhone tip

If you're using an iPhone, add the site to your homescreen (middle button at the bottom of your browser) for app-style quicker access.
