Irene D’Amico is a Full Professor at the Department of Physics of the University of York, UK. She is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics and the head of the Semiconductor Spintronics and Quantum Information group. She has been the Chair of the Research Committee (Head of Research) for the Department of Physics in York (2012-2016) and a member of the Department Management Team (2012-2016). She is an elected Member to the University Senate and to the University Science Faculty Board. D’Amico has been for various years the Non-Executive Director for Scientific Experience of IOP Publishing (2011-2014), and was the Vice-Chair of the European COST Action MP1403 ‘Nanoscale Quantum Optics’ (2015-2019, http://www.cost-nqo.eu). She is currently Editorial Board Member for the journal 'Materials' and Editorial Advisory Board Member for the journal 'Advanced Quantum Technologies' and for the Journal 'EPL'. She is also a Member of the Gender Equality Working Group of the European Quantum Flagship, and a Member of the IOP Committee for Quantum Optics, Quantum Information and Quantum Control. Between 2017 and 2021, she was one of the Elected Individual Member Delegates to the European Physical Society Council.
D’Amico is an established researcher with a strong international reputation. She is recognized for the discovery of the Spin Coulomb Drag effect (together with G. Vignale), a fundamental property relevant to the fields of spin transport and spintronic applications, and for her body of work on solid state quantum computation and entanglement. With a background in condensed matter theory, she has stretched across different fields and made high profile contributions to various research areas (e.g. colloidal systems, spintronics, nanoscience and quantum computation). D’Amico’s research interests include many-body interactions and entanglement in solid state systems; dynamics of spin chains; decoherence and dephasing in nanostructures; spin transport/dynamics in semiconductors; metric space approach to quantum mechanics; density functional theory (DFT); and, more recently, quantum thermodynamics. She has long-standing experience in the study of quantum many-body systems and their dynamics, in the mainframe of different flavours of DFT, linear response theory, and various computational techniques. She has pioneered bridging between quantum technologies/quantum thermodynamics and DFT.
D'Amico has been a professional researcher for over 20 years (PhD awarded in 2000), has written more than 140 publications as articles for international journals and book chapters, and given more than 120 invited talks, seminar, colloquia and public lectures worldwide. More details can be found below.
