R E S E A R C H   I N T E R E S T S

In her M.S. in Physics (1994-95, Universita' degli Studi di Trieste, Italy) Irene D'AMICO analyzed charged colloidal solutions using both Density Functional Theory (DFT) and Monte Carlo simulation techniques. During her PhD (1996-2000, University of Missouri-Columbia, Columbia, MO, USA) she studied quantum many-body systems and their dynamics, in the mainframe of time-dependent DFT and linear response theory. In the meantime she also kept investigating properties of charged colloidal systems in collaboration with Prof. H. Loewen and his group (Duesseldorf, Germany) using mostly Monte Carlo simulation techniques. Since 1999 her research interests include spintronics and in particular spin transport in metals and semiconductors, spin diffusion, and Coulomb interaction effects between different spin populations. She discovered and analyzed the
spin Coulomb drag effect  in collaboration with Prof. G. Vignale. More recently she has also designed spintronics single-electron devices.
Since the year 2000, initially as part of the Quantum Information Group at the Institute for Scientific Interchange (Torino, Italy), she has developed schemes and devices for quantum information/computation based on semiconductor quantum dots. In Torino she has also improved her competencies in nanoelectronics with a particular attention to optoelectronics, working in collaboration with Prof. F. Rossi. In this frame she has developed her knowledge of theoretical tools such as direct "exact" diagonalization techniques and analytical modeling of nanostructures.
In January 2005 she has joined as Lecturer the Condensed Matter Group at the Physics Department of the University of York. In July 2008 she has been promoted to Reader.
Her research interests include the analysis of few particle interactions in nano and mesoscopic systems and microscopic engineering of optical and electronic properties of semiconductor quantum dots, with a particular emphasis on applications, especially single-electron devices. She has proposed devices to create and distribute entanglement in solid state systems and she is interested in the study of the natural dynamics of spin chains. Her recent work include the use of dynamical decopling techniques to alleviate dephasing in nanostructures and the relationship between entanglement and density functional theory.
She has contributed with more than 70 publications to major international journals and books and given several scientific presentations at international conferences.
Her broad expertise spans from Monte Carlo simulations to many-body interactions, from density functional theory to quantum information/computation, from single-electron devices to spin transport and diffusion to optoelectronics.
