Strategies of Quantification is a research project funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Board For a period of t hree years (end date : June 30 2004).
This project looks at the various strategies that languages use in order to express quantificational meanings. Of particular interest to us and the main focus of the project is a set of languages including Japanese, Korean, Chinese, and Malayalam which, in their own individual ways seem to present a common and coherent solution to the problem of quantification. One of our main foci in the project is the interpretation of quantifiers formed by wh elements with a suffix meaning and or or and the derivation of meanings ranging from the simple existential or universal quantifiers to meanings of Free Choice and other context sensitive meanings.
The project is located at the university of York and is now in its second year. The links on the left will lead you to pretty much everything you might want to know about the work that we do in this project. If you find anything that interests you here or have comments to communicate to us we will be delighted to hear from you.
