Mike Beaney

I am currently Reader in Philosophy at the University of York, where I have been since October 2005. Before that, I worked at the Open University (2000-05), University of Manchester (1998-99), University of Leeds (1992-98), Birkbeck College, London (1990-92) and University of Sheffield (1986-88). I have also held Alexander von Humboldt Fellowships in Germany at the University of Jena (2006-07) and University of Erlangen-Nürnberg (1999-2000).

I live in Sheffield with Sharon Macdonald and our three children Tara, Thomas and Harriet (well, when they are all around now). Sharon is currently Professor of Social Anthropology at the University of Manchester, having previously worked at the University of Sheffield (1996-2006), Keele University (1990-95) and Brunel University (1988-90). We met at Oxford in 1979, when we were undergraduates at St. Catherine's College; and we did our doctorates at St. Catherine's as well, with a year spent on the Isle of Skye, where Sharon did her doctoral fieldwork. Tara is currently doing an MA in Comparative Literature (specializing in German and Japanese) at University College, London, having done her first degree in German and Philosophy at St. Anne's College, Oxford, and having spent last year learning Japanese at a university in Fukuoka. Thomas is in his final year at King's College, Cambridge, studying Natural Sciences (specializing in Pathology), and will be studying Medicine at Imperial College, London, next year. Harriet is currently doing her GCSE exams at Silverdale School in Sheffield.
