Exercise: BMI, alcohol consumption, and sex in the 2005 questionnaire, 2

Question 2. How would you interpret this regression equation?

Suggested answer

The multiple regression equation is:

        BMI = 21.3 + 0.057 × alcohol consumption + 1.93 × sex

where sex = 1 for a female and sex = 2 for a male.

This tells us that BMI is larger for men and for women who drink more alcohol, increasing by 0.057 Kg per m2 for each unit of alcohol per week.

It tells us that men have a larger mean BMI, by 1.93 Kg per m2, than do women who report consuming the same amount of alcohol.
