Suggested answer to exercise: Readmission to hospital for asthmatic children, 8

Question 8: Can we conclude giving a family a crisis plan increases the child's chance of being readmitted?

Suggested answer

This is an observational study and there may be many differences between children with and without crisis plans which we do not know about. It is always dangerous to conclude causation from data like these.

However, it is worth noting that adjustment for the available predictors of readmission did not materially alter the estimate of the effect of the crisis plan. There is no evidence to suggest that the crisis plan did NOT increase the chance of readmission.
