Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, presented Dr Mark Beech with the Sheikh Mubarak bin Mohammed Prize for Natural History at his Majlis in Abu Dhabi on 22 June 2009, as a reward for his contributions to UAE archaeology and natural history.

ESRI UC Middle East and Africa 2012 - Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC), Abu Dhabi, UAE. I will be participating in the 2012 Middle East and Africa ESRI User Conference.

ATHAR Programme's course on "Management and Conservation of Cultural Heritage: Sites and Museum Collections", Sharjah, UAE - I am giving a lecture on "The use of GIS as a Tool in the Management of the Cultural Heritage of Abu Dhabi". This is hosted by the the newly-established ATHAR Regional Conservation Centre (Architectural-Archaeological Tangible Heritage in the Arab Region) in Sharjah.

1-5 November 2012
Coastal Maritime project - undertaking the second season of fieldwork in collaboration with Dr Lucy Blue (Senior Lecturer in the Department of Archaeology at the University of Southampton and Director of the Maritime Archaeology Stewardship Trust, MAST) and Kristian Strutt (Experimental Officer and Director of the Archaeological Prospection Services of Southampton, APSS) from the Department of Archaeology at the University of Southampton. This involves geophysical survey and other fieldwork on Ghagha Island in Al Gharbia, to the far west of Abu Dhabi emirate, together with other colleagues from TCA Abu Dhabi's Historic Environment department.

16-17 October 2012
UNESCO Sub-Regional Meeting on the Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage - The representatives of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen met from 16 to 17 October 2012 in Manama, Bahrain in the UNESCO Sub-Regional Meeting on the Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage. The meeting aimed at discussing the development of underwater archaeology in the region, capacity-building, research, cooperation and the ratification of the 2001 Convention. I co-presented with Abdulla Al-Kaabi a paper about the underwater cultural heritage of the United Arab Emirates.

16 September 2012
Began teaching the course "HSS382 Archaeology of the Emirates" at Zayed University. This series of lectures will run every Sunday morning from 9-11 a.m. until January 2013. The course, run together with Dr Jane Bristol-Rhys, is within the College of Arts and Sciences and is one of the modules that are taken by Undergraduate Bachelors Degree in Emirati Studies (joint with the College of Communication and Media Sciences).
