It is a web page about the "Native Freshwater Species of the United Arab Emirates" (website now extinct), part of a preliminary attempt to compile an internet guide to the Marine and Freshwater Fishes of the United Arab Emirates.12 June 1999 The York Archaeology Society (ArcSoc) Conference was held in King's Manor on Saturday 12th June. I presented a paper entitled: "History versus Archaeology: an archaeozoological insight into Byzantine monastic life in Jordan", about my work on the fauna from Deir 'Ain 'Abata. 21 June 1999 Updated my webpages by adding additional references to research web links, research bibliography, publications and EAL (Environmental Archaeology links) (website now extinct). 5-17 July 1999 Attended the Seminar for Arabian Studies Seminar, Institute of Archaeology, University College, London. I presented a joint paper with J. Elders and E. Shepherd on: Reconsidering the ‘Ubaid of the southern Gulf: New results from excavations on Dalma island, U.A.E. To read an abstract of this paper click here. 5 August 1999 Added new papers to my publications list. These included a paper on a woman buried with a dog in an Umm an-Nar grave recently excavated in the United Arab Emirates, a report on the 1998 excavations carried out on the Ubaid-related settlement on Dalma (UAE), a note on the radiocarbon dating of Arabia's oldest date stones, plus the discovery of a new species of triggerfish in the Arabian Gulf. I also added some new links to other archaeozoologists web pages on the archaeozoology web page, part of EAL (website now extinct). 9 August 1999 Added new references to my research bibliography. This now includes 1189 references relating to the archaeology of the United Arab Emirates, Arabian Gulf and its surrrounding regions, as well as conderning fishes and marine biology of the Arabian Gulf and Western Indian Ocean region. I also added new specimens to my osteological comparative collection of Arabian Gulf fishes. The collection now includes a total of 51 families, 113 species and 215 specimens. 4-6 September 1999 Attended the York Research Forum on Bioarchaeology - A Conference in honour of the retirement of Professor Don Brothwell, held at the University of York. 24 September - 2 October 1999 I attended the 10th meeting of the ICAZ Fish Remains Working Group in New York City, U.S.A. and presented a joint paper with Dr. Mohammed Salem, of the former-Tropical Marine Research Unit, Department of Biology, University of York. For further details of this paper you may read the following abstract. 3-9 October 1999 Worked in the Archaeobiology Laboratory of Melinda Zeder, National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution, Washington D.C., U.S.A. - studying the animal bones from Dosariyah (Saudi Arabia), excavated by Abdullah Masry. 7 November 1999 Added a search engine and web counter to my home page courtesy of Bravenet - so you can now search the contents of my web pages. Try typing in a keyword or phrase and it should take you to any pages containing that particular word or combination of words. 8 November 1999 Updated my research bibliography. This now contains 1260 references on archaeology, botany, fisheries, geography, history, marine biology, natural history and zoology relating to the Arabian Gulf region. 13 December 1999 Added newly published papers to my list of publications - an article I co-authored on the Early Neolithic animal bones from Qermez Dere in Northern Iraq, and an article about La Tène period animal bones from Srbec in the Czech Republic.
