Nicola LeFanu

Nicola LeFanu

Nicola LeFanu was born in England in 1947, the daughter of Irish parents. Her mother was the composer Elizabeth Maconchy. Nicola LeFanu studied at Oxford and later in the U.S.A. where she was a Harkness Fellow. As well as composing, she has enjoyed teaching composition in England, America and Australia; for many years she had a part-time post at King's College, University of London, as lecturer, later Professor, in Composition. She has also been active as a conductor, director of composers' workshops, and so on. She has been particularly active in the field of equal opportunity, lobbying on behalf of women musicians. She is married to the composer David Lumsdaine and they have a son, Peter. Since October 1994 she has held the Chair of Music at the University of York.
 

Nicola LeFanu has been active in many aspects of the musical profession, and has served on numerous public boards and panels including the Arts Council for whom she has chaired a number of committees.
