Dear Languages students at the University of York,

on these pages you will find all the information you need on your year abroad, be it as an assistant teaching in schools or at a university. Please refer to the different general categories including information which applies to all the students going abroad and if you need specific information on the country you will be staying in or the different partner universities, please refer to the country specific pages. If your questions cannot be answered on this website, please feel free to contact us or use the contact information we have included for our partner universities or the British Council.

Your Year Abroad Options are:

British Council Assistantship

- you can work as a British Council Language Assistant in schools
- you get paid a salary because this is a "job contract", within Europe you receive an Erasmus Grant and a tuition fee waiver as part of the Erasmus scheme

Comenius Assistantship

- you work as a Comenius Language Assistant (if you can only go for one semester to a French or Spanish-speaking country)
- you receive a grant, but you will have to pay half the tuition fees for the year !

Erasmus Study Scheme

- you can study for a semester or a year at one of our Erasmus partner universities in France, Switzerland, Germany or Spain
- you will receive the Erasmus Grant for studying within Europe and you will receive a tuition fee waiver as part of the Erasmus scheme

NOTE: If you apply for a British Council assistantship in a country outside of Europe (and if you apply for a Comenius Assistantship within Europe) you will have to pay half the tuition fees for the academic year.

You can find further information about the British Council or our Erasmus partner institutions on the pages for assistantships and universities.

On those pages you will also find the Academic Instructions which explain the Year Abroad procedures and what you need to do in order to pass the year abroad.

And most importantly all the best and remember to enjoy your time abroad!
