Advanced Theoretical Techniques

I have just handed my half of this course over to Dr Koki Imada, who shares it with Dr Ben Dudson. The half of the course I used to do focuses on tensors; what they are, what they do, and where we find them in physics. We question and pick apart several assumptions that are made in earlier courses, and develop a more rigorous definition and understanding of what we mean by many mathematical objects, including scalars and vectors. This course is particularly useful to condensed matter theory and Tokamak plasma physics, and lays the foundation for General Relativity.

This course runs in the Autumn Term of the 3rd year of both BSc and MPhys courses. Many resources (including lecture notes) will be made available on the VLE.
