University Baroque Ensemble

The Baroque Ensemble appears in various guises from chamber to orchestral according to the repertoire to be performed. Smaller groups often play on early instruments; the larger ensemble is more often on modern instruments but exploring historically informed performance style. Membership is by usually invitation, though any interested players may apply for an audition. Rehearsals are held on Thursday afternoons (2.00-4.00pm).

Simon Jones and Peter Seymour are the joint directors.

Henry Purcell:

‘A Greater Musical genius England Never Had’

The first (at 7.30pm) of two concerts exploring Purcell’s sacred and secular repertoire with string anthems and the welcome ode Welcome! vicegerent of the mighty King


The second concert (at 9.00pm) features Réjouissance and Lynne Dawson (soprano) in a programme of sacred songs and trio sonatas by Purcell and John Blow.
