25th ANNIVERSARY SEASON

Concert Series 2003/2004

St Michael-le-Belfrey, York

8 November 2003 at 7.30pm

£14.00 (£12.00)

BACH MOTETS and SONATAS

with Lucy Russell – violin
Peter Seymour – harpsichord

JS Bach – Motets:      Fürchte dich nicht
                                    Komm, Jesu, komm
                                    Der Geist hilft
JC Bach? – Motet:    Merk auf, mein Herz
JS Bach – Sonatas for violin and harpsichord

JS Bach’s motets contain some of his most dramatic music; here we present three of the more familiar with one attributed to another member of the family. Bach’s Sonatas for violin and harpsichord always enjoy considerable popularity with players and audience alike. Lucy Russell is well known to our audiences as leader of Yorkshire Baroque Soloists.

BACH – CHRISTMAS ORATORIO

with

with Catherine Bott, Yvonne Seymour, Martyn Hill, Stephen Varcoe

 Yorkshire Baroque Soloists

Christmas Oratorio is rarely heard especially, as here, complete. The sequence of six cantatas (each of around 25 minutes) presents Bach at his finest and most festive calling for his largest orchestral forces with many memorable and ornate solo instrumental lines. The choral and solo writing also make substantial demands and we are pleased to welcome an outstanding team of soloists for this performance.

31 January 2004 at 7.30pm

£12.00 (£10.00)

STABAT MATER; SALVE REGINA

Settings by Alessandro Scarlatti, Browne, Byrd, Palestrina, Monteverdi and others

Certain texts seem always to inspire composers to particular excellence. This programme of music from the 16th to 18th centuries will contrast settings of these two famous texts both of which express the intense sorrow and grief borne by the Virgin.

£18.00 (£15.00)

MONTEVERDI – VESPERS 1610

with Yorkshire Baroque Soloists

Monteverdi’s celebrated 1610 publication of music for Vespers was written before he took up his position as maestro di cappella at St Mark’s, Venice. However, it is clear that he had the splendours of both that specific church and city in mind when composing one of the most lavish and spectacular collections of the Baroque.

2 May 2004 at 7.30pm

£12.00 (£10.00)

VICTORIA – Missa: Laetatus sum (a 12)

with 12-part motets, psalms and Magnificat

No other period of musical history seems to have managed to capture the glorious choral sonority and colour of the music of Spanish Renaissance. Tomás Luis de Victoria is the best known composer of this school and we are certain that our audiences will welcome our continued exploration of this repertoire. In this concert we include several specially-edited large scale compositions interspersed with more intimate motets and plainchant.

26 June 2004 at 7.30pm – GALA CONCERT

£18.00 (£15.00)

BACH – B MINOR MASS

with Yvonne Seymour, Vanessa Williamson, Jason Darnell, Joshua Ellicott, Julian Tovey

 Yorkshire Baroque Soloists

We conclude our 25th anniversary season with, arguably, our favourite piece – Bach’s towering masterpiece, B Minor Mass, which has been a regular feature of our programming; we make no apology for performing it again as the closing concert in our Gala season. The vocal soloists include some of the outstanding singers who have sung in or been associated with the choir.
