Meeting reception at Lendal Cellars on Monday 26 March

Lendal Cellars - A Brief History

The cellars, now a public house, stand on the site of part of a medieval Augustinian Priory. The priory was founded in the mid 13th Century and suppressed as part of the national dissolving of the monasteries on the 25th November 1538. During building alterations converting the cellars into a pub, well-built walls were discovered beneath the floor. These were dated to the 14th Century; further evidence of the remains of the priory was the uncovering of a human adult skeleton near these walls. During the early part of the 18th century, most of the area came into possession of the Oldfield family. Among the early enterprising developments was the institution of a wine and spirits merchant. This association with liquor continues today with Lendal Cellars being a bustling city centre pub popular with both tourists and locals alike.
