York is a wonderful place to visit. The city has a long history; much of this remains part of the life and fabric of the city. For example York Minister and the city walls, dominate the central area. Museums give insight to into the past at the Jorvik Viking Centre, Castle Museum, Yorkshire Museum, and the development of the modern technical age at the National Railway Museum. Close by is Castle Howard, a spectacular palace, and York's country house and garden Beningbrough. York's setting on the River Ouse in the Vale of York between two National Parks, the Yorkshire Dales to the west and North York Moors (2nd site here) to the east, is superb with plenty of opportunities for walking. There is more dramatic scenery along the Yorkshire Coast, and the gentle beauty of the Yorkshire Wolds.
