ABSTRACT: The authors show that macroscopic quantum superpositions of the electromagnetic field can be generated through amplification of microscopic quantum superpositions prepared in a single atom. Their scheme has the advantage that dissipation is negligible, and hence the superpositions are not rapidly destroyed.
