Coaching
The club has many coaches, covering all 3 weapons, including some with membership of the British Academy of Fencing. Foil Coaches These coaches teach the beginners courses in the first and second terms. They may also be available to give individual or group lessons during sessions to those who have completed their beginners course but would like to improve, those who have missed a session of their beginners course and need to catch up or those who think they've forgotten what they were taught. Sabre & Epée Coaches The sabre and epée coaches give basic beginners courses in their weapon to those who have completed their beginners course and would like to try a different weapon. They may also be available to give individual or group lessons during sessions to those who decide to take up a weapon other than foil, or those who already fence these weapons, but would like to improve. If you want a lesson, speak to the club president at a session, who will direct you to an appropriate coach. Dave Jerry Dave is a professional fencing coach and a provost member of the British Academy of Fencing. He is present at Tuesday sessions to coach anybody who has completed their beginners course and wants an individual lesson. He also coaches the club teams for BUCS (British University and College Sport) matches and the annual Roses tournament against the University of Lancaster. Becoming a Coach During the second half of the summer term, Dave Jerry runs a course for all those who wish to become a level 1 foil coach. People who already have their level 1 foil coaching award may enquire about taking level 1 awards in other weapons. Although this course is open to all club members, anybody considering taking the course should consider their own fencing competence. If in doubt, ask any of the club coaches. This course is by recommendation of the executive committee only. Coaching Costs Excluding the fee for the level 1 coaching award, all coaching costs are included in the club membership fees. |
