University of York Open

The results of the recent University of York Open competition can be found here.

Team Matches
Team fencing matches are between two teams of 3-9 fencers (plus up to 3 substitutes). Each weapon is fenced by 3 people (and possibly a substitute), although any individual fencer may fence 1, 2 or all 3 weapons. Each fencer then faces every fencer on the opposing team. The team scores are cumulative so that the first pair of fencers compete for five hits (or 3 minutes). The second pair then begin at the score that the first pair finished at, and compete to increase it to ten points (or for a further 3 minutes). This pattern continues until the final pair fight for the final three minutes, or increase their score to 45. This is repeated on each weapon and the weapon scores are added together for a total score. In the event of a tie, the team who won the most weapons is victorious.

Anybody interested in fencing for any of the teams should be an experienced fencer (i.e. should have completed the beginners course), regularly attend club sessions to practise and speak to the captain of the team they wish to fence for.

BUCS
The men's first team, the men's second team and the women's team compete annually in the British University and College Sports (BUCS - formally BUSA) championships. This consists of six or seven matches against other local university teams.

In the 2009/2010 season, York Men's 1st team came top of their league and advanced to the final of the Northern Conference Cup, where they were placed second behind Keele Men's 1st. York Women's team also came top of their league and have secured promotion to the premier league for next season. They were knocked out of the championship by The University of Oxford. York Men's 2nd team was a new entry for the 2009/2010 season. They were placed 8th in their league and were knocked out in the first round of the Northern Conference cup by University of Newcastle.

Members of the club (up to six of each gender in each weapon) also enter the annual BUCS individual championship in Nottingham on the first weekend in December.

Roses
Roses is an annual sporting competition which has been held between the Universities of York and Lancaster over a weekend at the start of the summer term since 1965. The host university alternates each year, with the 2010 competition to be held in Lancaster. Currently York lead having won 23 tournaments (including the previous 3) to Lancaster's 21 with one draw in 1974.

The fencing is usually held on the Saturday, with the men's first and second teams and the women's team all competing. In 2008, all three York teams beat their Lancaster counterparts, helping York to an overall away victory. This incredible success led to the fencing club being awarded the Roses Team of the Year trophy.
