Rides

There's Something for Everyone...

Whether you want to do a bit of cross-country, road or come on one of our bicycle rides. If you're interested in any of the below activities then please email (socs224@hotmail.com) the club or come along to one of our socials

Cross-Country:

Our cross-country rides usually take place every weekend and there are even occassionally night rides during the week. Most of our rides take place in the surrounding countryside of Yorkshire, where there are loads of different trails offering almost everything you can think of from fast decents, technical sections and for those of you who like it, greulling climbs! Of course it's not always like that and if you're not an experienced mountain biker we'll try and break you in gently- our club's current president and treasurer are still fairly novice so you're not alone and there'll be plenty of much more experienced people around to help you out! Cross-country rides usually cost around £5, which goes towards the cost of travel there and back as well as providing the club with maps (which you can borrow as a member) and things such as first aid supplies.

Road:

This year we're hoping to have a much bigger road section than last year so if you've got a road bike, or a mountain bike with slicks and a lot of energy, then the road section may be for you. Rides will hopefully take place on Wednesday afternoons, leaving from the University and will either involve jaunting about the local country lanes or through the city. At the moment we're still on the lookout for a new road captain so if you're interested drop us an email (socs224@york.ac.uk) or come see us at Freshers Fair- don't worry about not knowing too much because we've got plenty of routes and maps to get you started. As road rides take place from the University they are free to take part in.

Bicycle Rides :

What's a bicycle ride I hear you say? It's like cycling but a little more relaxed- less speed, less mud and more pubs! There's no need for any type of fantastic space aged technology bike to come along on one of these rides, just whatever you usually go around on. If you're feeling brave you could even try it on the club's tandem! Bicycle rides are free and usually take place when the weather's good.

Training:

For those of you who want to improve their fitness for whatever reason then we're thinking of offering training rides in the coming year. The rides would most likely take the form of several short sessions a few evenings a week that would aim to imrprove speed, hill climbing ability (if we can find a big enough hill) and all around general fitness. You don't have to do it just because you want to improve your cycling ability- cycling's good for all round fitness and getting out on your bike is a lot better than just staring at a gym wall! Even better, once you've joined the club training rides are free!
