About the sport

Canoe Polo is an excellent opportunity to improve fitness and general paddling skills. Polo is a contact sport between two teams of five players, who compete to score in goals suspended two metres above the water. Polo can be played in a swimming pool or on any stretch of flat water. Because polo is played at a fast pace, teamwork and positioning are key aspects of the game. Rules of Canoe Polo can be found here (http://www.canoepolo.org.uk/rules/)

Canoe Polo is...

  • Dynamic and fast
  • Easy to learn
  • Accessible to all ages and genders with just minimal kayaking skills
  • Competitive and fun

Canoe Polo Sessions

We host both pool sessions and river/lake sessions, initially focused upon basic kayaking skills and ball control. Later, the focus is training before major tournaments such as BUSA or Roses, but occasionally we will go to the Ouse for some fitness and general training. The club takes part in regional tournaments once a term, and these are ideal opportunities for paddlers to hone their skills and take part in a competitive team-based sport.

Equipment

Polo Boats are lighter than white-water kayaks, and are therefore both fast and maneuverable. However, this means they are less stable. Paddles are very light weight and designed with both pulling power and ball control in mind. Helmets with faceguards are compulsory.
