About Canoe Polo

Canoe Polo is an excellent opportunity to improve fitness and general paddling skills. Polo is a contact sport between two teams of five players, who compete to score in goals suspended two metres above the water. Polo can be played in a swimming pool or on any stretch of flat water. Because polo is played at a fast pace, teamwork and positioning are key aspects of the game. Rules of Canoe Polo can be found here (http://www.canoepolo.org.uk/rules/)

Canoe Polo is...

  • Dynamic and fast
  • Easy to learn
  • Accessible to all ages and genders with just minimal kayaking skills
  • Competitive and fun

How To Get Involved

The easiest way to get involved with the club is to come and find us at Freshers Fair at the start of the Autumn term. We'll have a stall running all day with lots of information on the club, what's involved, who we are etc.

Alternatively you can email us on canoepolo@yusu.org and we will add you to our mailing list so that you can find out everything that is going on. You can also check us out on our Facebook group.

Have no fear if you have no experience; we're a small friendly club who welcome members of all ages and abilities. Come along and give it a go!

If you happen to come across us later in the year, not to worry - we gladly accept new members all year around. Just drop us an email and we'll sort you out with all the details.

Equipment

You don't need to have any of your own equiptment to join the Canoe Polo club, the membership fee of £15 per year, includes free kit hire.

For a typical game of polo you will use:

  • A fibre glass polo boat; these are lighter, faster and more maneuverable than white water boats, but also less stable!
  • Sprinting paddles; these are light weight and designed with both pulling power and ball control in mind.
  • A spray deck; this will stop the water from entering your boat, and mean that you will be able to 'roll' your boat back the right way up if you capsize - with a bit of practice anyway!
  • A bouyancy aid; these are padded at the sides for extra protection and have numbers on to allow members to be easily identified by the referee and each other.
  • A helmet; with a faceguard to avoid any paddles in the face! .
