Game Report

After spending the day doing a canoe polo referee course, we headed to the container grabbing pasties and biscuits on the way. A quick turn around, carefully loading 6 boats onto Kit's large family car, soon saw us back at Yearsley pool for our second tournament in the league. It was nice to see the familiar faces of the opposing teams - our friends from Lancaster, the children of FOA, the oldies from Pennine Zimmers. But we were "all poloed up", competitive and ready to go.

With an early goal from Kit Harding (our first goal in the league), we were extremely excited! Unfortunately, the opposition drew and very close to the end of the game scored again meaning we lost 2-1.

The next game was similar to the first, with another smashing goal from Kit Harding.

Our first encouter with Green Star C was an interesting one! Their team clearly lacked team spirit, with team members arguing throughout. We put up a good fight and played well but just couldn't get the goals in. Unfortunately, they sneakily scored near to the end of the game. However, as they put together a scratch team, it was a 3-0 victory to us on the league table - giving us some much needed points!

Red Rose and FOA C were once again, tough competition. But we did not embarass ourselves and maybe if we had played against them earlier in the evening we could have kept a few more goals out.

Everyone played really well in the tournament and once again we really enjoyed ourselves. Well done to Kit for scoring. Our freshers Yari and Katy once again impressing us with their rolling. Claire's experience and tactics made our play a lot more focused and our defensive play improved throughout the evening. Joe did an excellent job of refereeing for us, after being thrown in at the deep end just after passing his ref's theory (as we all did... apart from a certain President...) Another highly enjoyable evening (and day) of canoe polo :) - Sophie Austin

Game Report

Having crammed the six of us into Chaz’s granny-doing-the-shopping sized car and made our way to Yearsley pool through the back streets of York, we arrived in time to play in the first match of the tournament, against Sheffield. Although they were clearly more used to playing together as a team than we were, we managed to put up a good fight, with two goals scored by Tom Jarvis and Joe Newbold.

Our second match, against Green Star B team, was more evenly matched, and we were able to apply Piero’s pre-match words of wisdom about taking our time to make useful decisions when we have the ball. We won the game 1-0 with an inspiring goal from Piero Conca, but as Green Star had fielded a scratch team, all their matches for the evening were automatically scored 3-0.

Our last two matches, despite convincing 3-0 losses, saw us working together as a team far more effectively, and picking up helpful tips from one of the Hull players’ strident advice to the rest of his team!

The evening was a lot of fun and great motivation, with our first league match win of the season. Mark Stoner played brilliantly in his first competitive polo games, and the rest of the team were dedicated and enthusiastic even in the face of injury to sensitive regions! Our next tournament, in January, should see even more improvement, especially with the introduction of 7 a.m. training sessions on the Ouse (now that is dedication). - Katie Mckenna

Wharfe Ducks B 1-0 N/A

Game Report

Having arrived succesfully at Yearsley pool, with help from Wharfe Ducks coach Sue in getting the boats there, the team had little time to be nervous as they were playing in the very first match. The pool is huge and, as Kaz delighted in telling everybody, the only 50 yard pool in the UK. The first match was against Lancaster's team, Red Rose, and much as they were friendly was slightly intimidating. The team, never having all played together before did staggeringly well though, holding their own for the majority of the first half and eventually losing, although only 4-0. An impressive feat, and they only continued to improve.

The rest of the tournament was something of a blur, with Lottie and Jess' boyfriend Ben screaming on the sidelines, not that anybody could distinguish the indiviual words. The team improved with every game, with new recruits Joe and Kaz providing valuable advice on defense strategies and in the last game we only conceded one goal!

The whole evening was really fun and a good bonding experience as much as anything else. Everybody encouraged each other and for the most part the opposing teams were friendly and played with good sportsmanship. And for those that weren't...well...all I can say is i wouldn't want to be in their boats (?) the next time they try and push Jess in out of possesion!

Penine C 7-1 Luke Smalley

Game Report

On a arriving a little late to the first game, it was a bit of a rush to get on the water in time, so no time for any team chats. Teamwork in the first game was a little lax and everyone was trying to sprint for the ball at the same time! We were all thrown in at the deep end, playing a tough team after a long time without training.

In the second game, the opposition were again very strong, but we started to make a few breaks to their defense and a few attempts at scoring were made! Our defense was a little weak, but attack was certainly strong and we felt a great improvement from the previous game. James Molloy played in this game in place of Sarah Goss.

By the third game, we were all warmed up and raring to go! Still a little too enthusiastic on the attack and not really considering the defense quite enough, but we were making a lot of breaks to their defense and passing between players was a lot stronger. In the second half a goal was scored by Luke Smalley, when their goal was left unattended, it was following an excellent solo sprint up the pitch, and a courageous shot from just past the halfway line. It made up for the 3 green cards, he had been given throughout the day!

The tournament showed a gallant effort by all, considering the difficult opposition of division 3 and having not trained over the summer. Tom Jarvis and Katie McKenna, also showed us some excellent refereeing, having passed the course the week before.
