Simply by typing in ftp://yourusername@ftp.york.ac.uk into the address bar of an internet browser and then your normal computing services password you should see your files on the main university network.
The interface is drag and drop like any other windows folder, transferring files may take a little time as they go over the internet.
This can be very useful for accessing your main university network from home and transferring files to and from the university and also when you want to access files from the separate biology network.
More technical information FTP stands for file transfer protocol and is quite an old but still useful way of transferring files
It is also possible to use FTP programs, which have more functionality and are more reliable then using internet browsers, these can be downloaded free and are also available on the programs list on any campus computer
At the moment I'm not aware of this kind of access to the Biology network.
