Studentships
Hello everyone, this is mainly aimed at second year students
who are interested in a doing a studentship over the summer. The closing date
for many of the funded studentships offered is fast approaching so you need to
get yourself in gear or miss out.
Below is a list of some of the opportunities available.
However they all have different application procedures. Some you need to submit
a CV for others you need to be recommended by a member of the department. For

A few organizations offer funds to
support summer vacation work in research laboratories.
- The Society for General Microbiology
offers grants to Society members to fund penultimate year undergraduate
students undertaking an 8-week research project on a microbiological topic
in the summer vacation. (£150 per week). The closing date for applications
is in February each year. Applications should be made by academic
supervisors, who must be SGM members.
- The Nuffield Foundation offers
undergraduate research bursaries to enable students in UK institutions to
carry out scientific work for 6-10 weeks in the summer vacation. (£140 per
week or £150 in London). The closing date for applications is in February
each year.
- STEP, the Shell Technology Enterprise Scheme places
2nd year undergraduates (of any degree discipline) in small and medium
sized companies for 8 weeks over the summer vacation. (Up to £170 per
week). The placements are not lab based and cover a range of topics such
as e-commerce and website development. Closing date is in early June each
year.
- The Wellcome Trust provides
Vacation Scholarships to encourage undergraduates with an interest in
biomedical research. These provide a small stipend for a period of up to 8
weeks in the summer vacation. (£155 per week or £165 in London).
Applications are made through the student's department.
- SfAM
(Society for Applied Microbiology) runs a "students into work"
scheme each year. Full Society members can apply on behalf of an
undergraduate student for up to £120 per week to fund a studentship of up
to ten weeks in the summer vacation before the final year. Closing date is
in February each year.
- The Biochemical Society also
offers a few vacation studentships of 6 - 10 weeks for penultimate year
undergraduate students. Applications are made by Society members on behalf
of a named student. Closing date is at the end of February each year.
