York Laboratory for Spintronics and Nanodevices

York Laboratory for Spintronics and Nanodevices, directed by Dr. Yongbing Xu, consists of three laboratories including MBE growth Lab, magneto-transport measurement lab, and magneto-optical characterisation lab.  Dr. Xu is an Anniversary Reader in Nanotechnology, and currently supervises five PhD students, in the University of York, one of the top universities in UK. The research interests of his laboratory are in the areas of nano scale science and nanotechnology, and in particular, spintronics, magnetic nanomaterials, nanofabrication, nanoelectronics and nanomagnetism. Before he moved to York in 2000 as a lecturer, he was a post-doctoral research associate and late an EPSRC advanced fellow in Cavendish Laboratory and Microelectronics Research Centre, University of Cambridge. He was awarded the PhDs by Nanjing University, China, in 1993, and Leeds University, UK, in 1996. He has published more than 120 papers in academic journals, given many talks and invited talks in national and international academic conferences and organised the 7th Oxford-Kobe Materials Seminar on Spintronics, 2004 and the 1st WUN International Conference on Spintronic Materials and Technology, 2007.  He is the coordinator and Chair of the Steering committee of the WUN (Worldwide University Network) Grand Challenge Project “Spintronics”, which includes 20 partners from 12 leading UK, USA, and China universities. He is the section editor in Spintronics of the journal “Current Opinion in Solid State and Materials Science” by Elsevier. He is the editor of the book “Spintronic Materials and Technology”, which will be published by Taylor and Francis in summer 2006. He is a member of the EPSRC Peer Review College and Institute of Physics. In 2000, he was awarded the prestigious EPSRC advanced research fellowship.  He collaborates extensively with several leading research groups and international companies in UK and around the world.
