17. Discretionary
If groupware doesn't appeal to discretionary use, it has less of a chance
of appealing to users. If there is a shortage of users, then the collaborative
functions of groupware don't get used anyway. Features that appeal to discretionary
use invite users to keep the groupware running for them selves, making it
more likely for it to work as a medium for collaboration with others opportunististically.
Example(s): New generation electronic calendar systems (schedule+, calendar
manager). Features that appeal to discretionary use are meeting reminders,
to do lists.
