Randomised Trial of Calcium and Vitamin D
supplementation in Primary Care (Funder - Northern
and Yorkshire, R&D);
This project is based in primary care and more than 3,000 women aged 70 years
and over have been randomised to receive calcium and vitamin D supplements for
act as controls to see if this reduces fractures. Study results published
by the BMJ (no benefit of supplements).

This is a secondary prevention trial using calcium or
vitamin D for fracture prevention. Study results published by the Lancet

(UKBEAM) (Funder - MRC);
Factorial trial looking at the value of manipulation, exercise or best care for
acute backpain. Study results published by the
British Medical Journal November 2004. Manipulation produced modest
effects and was cost effective.
· Randomised Trial of physiotherapy for neck pain (SPRINTER with

brief intervention for neck pain. Study results published by the British
Medical Journal January 2005. Usual care produced better effects and
showed an interaction with patient preference.
