Over the last 12 or so years we have been interested in exploring the interactions of the dibenzylidene acetone (dba) ligand,and structural variants thereof, with various metals.
We were able to deduce the confounding chemical structure of the ubiqitous Pd2(dba)3 complex, using combined experimental and theoretical methodologies. Using deuterim and carbon-13 labeling we were able to deduce the complex network of alkene-Pd interactions in both major and minor isomeric forms of Pd2(dba)3. The 1H NMR data of various labeled complexes are shown below, including the 1H COSY spectrum of the unlabeled olefinic deriviatve.
