Exercise: Test for urinary tract infection, answer 1

Question 1: The sensitivity of urine Gram stain was 96.2%. What does this mean and what can we conclude?

Suggested answer:

The sensitivity of a test is the proportion of those people with the disease, i.e. with urinary tract infections, who are positive on the test.

96.2% is very high, so most people with UTI would be detected by the urine Gram stain test.
