This graph shows two line plots on the same axes. The vertical axis shows health related quality of life, labeled 0, 0.5, 1.0. The horizontal axis shows health state duration in years, not labeled. Two points are marked on the horizontal axis as death 1 and death 2. The first line is labeled "without programme" and is the same as in Figure 2. The line starts at the vertical axis where quality of life = 1, is horizontal for a while, then slopes sharply downwards until quality of life = 0.5, then is horizontal for a while, then slopes down again to meet the horizontal axis, quality of life = 0, at death 1. The space between the axes and the line is shaded. The second line is labeled "with programme". The line starts at the vertical axis where quality of life = 1, is horizontal for a greater distance than line 1, then slopes sharply downwards until quality of life = 0.8, then is horizontal for a while, the same distance as line 1, so projects beyond it, then slopes down again to meet the horizontal axis, quality of life = 0, at death 2. The space between the two lines is shaded, differently from that between line 1 and the axes.
