Brush up your maths: answer to multiplying fractions exercise

Multiply four fifths by three quarters.

      4       3           4 × 3           12           3
      –– × ––   =   –––––   =   –––   =   ––
      5       4           5 × 4           20           5

The numerator 12 and the denominator 20 have a common factor 4. We divide top and bottom by 4 to get 3/5.
