Brush up your maths: answer to fractional powers exercise

What is 9 raised to the power ½? What is 8 raised to the power –1/3?

9 raised to the power ½ is 9½ = 3, because 3 is the square root of 9.

8 raised to the power –1/3 is 8–1/3 = 1/81/3. This is one divided by the cube root of 8. The cube root of 8 = 2. So 8–1/3 = 1/2 = ½.
