The figure shows a scatter plot of two pulse rates, the first measurement on the horizontal axis, the second on the vertical axis. There is a fairly strong relationship (r=0.68). The line of equality is shown at 45 degrees to the two axes. This is the line on which the points would all lie if the two pulse measurements were the same.
A horizontal line is drawn at second pulse = 60 beats per minute, with a shaded area on either side from 55 to 65 beats per minute. A large diamond marks the point of the mean first pulse for second pulse between 55 and 65. Mean first pulse = 65 beats per minute.
The regression of first pulse on second is shown, a line steeper than the line of equality. It passes close to the diasmond mark, very slightly to the left.
