THE CHURCH'S YEAR

English Jacobean music by Tomkins, Weelkes, Gibbons and Jeffreys

The English Church under James 1 and Charles I was blessed with composers of great individuality and inventiveness.   Tomkins, Weelkes and Gibbons maintain their place in the liturgy today, while the works of Jeffreys open an unusual window on 17th-century spirituality.

BACH - LUTHERAN MASSES in F Major and A Major

HANDEL - THE WAYS OF ZION DO MOURN

Last season we performed two of Bach's rarely-heard Masses for the Lutheran Church.  Here are two more, sure to be equally revelatory.   We couple them with the magnificent full-scale anthem that Handel wrote for the funeral of Queen Caroline in 1737.
