Prospective PhD Applicants

Looking for a PhD in Enterprise Systems?

I am currently recruiting 2-3 new PhD candidates working in Enterprise Systems. I have particular projects related to Model-Driven Engineering (MDE), agile methods, domain-specific languages, model transformation, simulation and scalability.

What background do I need?

You need to have a good first degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Software Engineering. You should have strong object-oriented design and development skills, an independent streak, good ideas of your own, and the desire to work in a world-class research group. You also need to be able to demonstrate accomplishment: what have you done in the past? What have you completed? This might be a project that you have finished, software that you have built, a paper that you've had published, etc. We want people who take pride in accomplishing things, and want to do more!

Who will I be working with?

You will be working with a world-class team of researchers in the fields of Model-Driven Engineering, Enterprise Systems and Cloud Computing. In 2014, our research group had the highest number of accepted papers in the leading international conference in MDE (ACM/IEEE International Conference on Model-Driven Engineering, Languages and Systems). We are currently leading several of the largest MDE and modelling projects in Europe, as well as the development of one of the most widely adopted open-source MDE platforms, Epsilon, which is used in organisations and companies such as NASA, BAE Systems, IBM, Thales and Siemens.

Where will I be based?

Our research group is located in the Ron Cooke Hub, a new, purpose-built building in the city of York, one of the most historic, picturesque and safe cities in the United Kingdom. The Hub hosts several world-class research groups and a growing number of startups.

What is the typical duration of a PhD in the group?

The typical duration of a PhD is 3-4 years. Being in a world-leading position in the field of MDE means that we will be able to help you select a cutting-edge topic for your PhD project so that you can engage in meaningful research from the first year of the programme. In fact, many of our PhD students start publishing novel results from as early as the second year of their project.

Are there any scholarships available?

Please have a look at this page for information regarding available scholarships/funding. Depending on your qualifications and the competition, the Department of Computer Science may be able to offer a tuition fee waiver.
