Spring Term 2002
Unless otherwise indicated, talks are in Vanbrugh College, room V/131, at
11:30 every (well, almost every!) Wednesday morning during term. Coffee
beforehand in the same room at 11:00. Everybody welcome!
Final programme.
- Wednesday 23rd January 2002
- Martin Smith
(Leeds)
- The Reproducing Kernel Thesis for Toeplitz Operators on the
Paley-Wiener Space
- Abstract: "Bonsall's Theorem" asserts that a Hankel operator on the
Hardy space of the disc is bounded provided it is bounded on the set of
all normalised reproducing kernels for the space. I shall prove an
analogous result for Toeplitz operators on the Paley-Wiener space.
- Wednesday 30th January 2002
- Basil Bernik (visiting York)
- Diophantine Problems on Manifolds
- Wednesday 6th February 2002
- Wednesday 13th February 2002
- Ian McIntosh
- The Taniyama-Shimura conjecture: what Wiles had to prove
- Abstract: It is probably fair to say that most mathematicians
are not familiar with the objects which appear in the full statement
of the Taniyama-Shimura -(Weil-Wiles-Taylor?) theorem, let alone how Wiles
proved it. Come and listen to someone who has studied algebraic number
theory for all of a week attempt to sort this all out in real time.
Heckling by bona fide number theorists welcome.
- This is part of the
expository seminar series
organised by Ian McIntosh.
- Wednesday 27th February 2002
- Maurice Dodson
- Beyond Borel-Cantelli, to applications in Diophantine approximation
- Wednesday 6th March 2002
- Simon Eveson
- Fourier Analysis on Locally Compact Abelian Groups
- Abstract: a brief and not too technical introduction to Fourier
Analysis in the context of Haar measure on locally compact Abelian
groups: an abstract framework which includes as special cases Fourier
series, conventional Fourier transforms and discrete Fourier
transforms.
- This is part of the
expository seminar series
organised by Ian McIntosh.
- Wednesday 13th March 2002
- CANCELLED We hope to reschedule this talk for next term.
- Vladimir Kisil
(Leeds)
- Quantum Mechanics is Differential Geometry Filtered Through Group
Representation.
- Monday 25th March 2002 (Note unusual date! 11:30 V/131 as usual)
- Gianluca Vinti (University of Perugia, visiting York)
- Approximation by integral operators in the space of functions with
bounded variation.
- Tuesday 26 March 2002 (Note unusual date! 11:30 V/131 as usual)
- Carlo Bardaro (University of Perugia, visiting York)
- On singularity concepts for kernels of nonlinear integral
operators.
