book review request policy

I occasionally get emails from authors or publishers, asking if I would like to review a particular book. Although I am flattered that people think that my reviews are worthwhile, my reply is:

I have made it a rule not to do reviews on request (except some technical books for academic journals, where that's part of my job!). I have an enormous backlog of books to read, and want to keep the reviewing a hobby, not an obligation.
