Right to roam in the Yorkshire Wolds

After decades of campaigning by the Rambler's Association, we now have a legal right of access on foot to some of the dry valleys in the Yorkshire Wolds. This new legal right - or right to roam - provided by The Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000 (CRoW), applies only to mapped areas of uncultivated, open countryside namely mountain, moor, heath, down and registered common land. The mapped areas in the Yorkshire Wolds is down, whereas in the North York Moors and the Yorkshire Dales the majority is moor. Access land in the Vale of York consists of common land and section 15 land (access rights already existing under various other enactments, which often include "higher rights" e.g. horse riding), plus some heath.

The RA is campaigning for a legal right of access to our coastline and beaches for future generations. Part of the draft Marine Bill contains important provisions for improving access
