Exercise: Vocabulary, age, and epilepsy, 2

Question 2: What is a regression line?

Suggested answer

'Regression' is the name given to a group of procedures used to predict one variable, called the outcome, from another variable, called the predictor. A regression line is the graphical representation of the best prediction of the outcome variable (vocabulary test score) from the predictor (age).

This is a straight line, because the relationship which has been imposed on the data is of the form:

vocabulary test score = intercept + slope × age.
