Suggested answer to exercise: House dust mite and wheeze in Ethiopia, 3

Question 3: The risk of wheeze increased in relation to the level of house dust mite measured in bedding, the odds ratio per quartile being 1.26. What is a quartile?

Suggested answer

There are three quartiles, the values which cut off the lowest quarter of the distribution, the lowest half, and the lowest three quarters. The quartile which cuts off the lower half is the median. Alternatively, the term may be used incorrectly to mean the four equal parts into which the distribution is divided at the quartiles.
