Question 3: What do the authors mean by ‘cumulative contribution was 81.2%’?

The total of the variances of the four factors represents 81.2% of the total variance of all the variables combined. The sum of the eigenvalues of the first four factors is 81.2% of the sum of all the eigenvalues, equal to the number of variables. This is quite a high proportion from so many variables.
