Tones and Chords
When two or more tones (notes of a particular pitch) combine, they form a chord:

D plus G sharp above combine to give an augmented fourth

The ratio between the tones' pitch frequencies determines the 'colour' of the resultant chord.

E flat plus F above plus B flat above that combine to give a three-note chord
