Graph description: Figure 1. Comparison of acupuncture with sham acupuncture for control of pain

This figure has three panels side by side. The first and third panels are all text, the second panel is a graphic.

The first panel is a table with seven columns. The first column shows the thirteen study names. Columns 2, 3, and 4 show the mean, standard deviation, and number of participants for the acupuncture groups. Columns 5, 6, and 7 show the mean, standard deviation, and number of participants for the placebo acupuncture groups. At the bottom of the table is an additional row with Total and 95 percent confidence interval in the first column, nothing in columns 2 and 3, the number 1206 in column 4, nothing in columns 5 and 6, and the number 943 in the placebo column. Below this is a row which reads test for heterogeneity: chi-squared = 17.3, degrees of freedom = 11, P = 0.10, I squared = 36%, and a row which reads Test for overall effect: z = 3.80, P < 0.001.

The second panel is headed Standarised mean difference and 95% confidence interval. It has for each row of the first panel a horzontal line with a square in the middle of it. The squares vary in size and the lines very in length, the larger studies having bigger squares and shorter lines than the smaller studies. At the bottom, in the total row, is a diamond shape. Below this is a scale labeled minus 2, minus 1, zero, 1 and 2.

The third panel is a table with two columns. The first column is headed weight percent and the second column is headed Standarised mean difference and 95% confidence interval. In the first column, there is for each row of the first panel a number between 0 and 34. In the second column, there is a number bewteen minus 2 and plus 1, then brackets containing two more numbers separated by the word to. These are the study names, weight percent, Standarised mean difference, and 95% confidence interval: Brinkhaus, 9.3, minus 0.32, minus 0.61 to minus 0.03, Fanti, 1.0, minus 0.53, minus 1.62 to 0.37, Foster, 11.5, 0.09, minus 0.16 to 0.35, Kotani, 0, minus 1.66, minus 2.34 to minus 0.98, Leibing, 3.7, minus 0.27. minus 0.73 to 0.19, Lin, 3.4, minus 0.16, minus 0.65 to 0.32, Linde, 10.0, 0.05, minus 0.23 to 0.33, Melchart, 7.9, minus 0.12, minus 0.44 to 0.19, Molsberger, 5.7, minus 0.50, minus 0.87 to minus 0.13, Scharf, 33.7, minus 0.13, minus 0.28 to 0.02, Sprott, 1.0, minus 0.17, minus 1.05 to 0.71, Wang, 3.4, minus 0.15, minus 0.63 to 0.33, Witt, 9.5, minus 0.52, minus 0.80 to minus 0.23. At the bottom of the table, the total row has 100.0 and minus 0.17, with minus 0.26 to minus 0.08 in brackets.
