Dr Radu Calinescu: PhD projects in Computer Science
I am currently recruiting new PhD candidates in the areas of formal modelling, verification and model-driven engineering of autonomous and self-adaptive systems
for safety-critical and mission-critical applications.

What are Autonomous and Self-Adaptive Systems?
Autonomous systems are "smart, connected machines [...] acting as tools to support us, making independent decisions and even learning. They act and sense
in the real world, connected and collaborating in the internet of things, generating and enabled by large quantities of data, using artificial intelligence
to reason, classify, control and interact." (Foresight Review of Robotics and Autonomous Systems)
Self-adaptive systems are software-controlled systems able to reconfigure in response to changes in their environment, requirements and internal state.
These systems are in increasing demand in healthcare, transportation, defence, finance and many other domains, and are the subject of intense research by a vibrant and rapidly growing
research community.
Who will you be working with?
You will be working with a world-class team of researchers in the field of model-driven engineering and self-adaptive systems. Our research group is regularly publishing in
leading software engineering, modelling, and self-adaptive systems journals including
IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering,
IEEE Transactions on Reliability,
Journal of Systems and Software and
Automated Software Engineering.
Where will you be located?
Our research group is located in the
Ron Cooke Hub, a new, purpose-built building in the city of York,
one of the most historic, picturesque and safe cities in the United Kingdom. The Hub hosts several world-class research groups and a growing number of startups.
What is the typical duration of a PhD in the group?
The typical duration of a PhD is 3-4 years. Being in a leading position in the fields of self-adaptive systems and model-driven engineering means that
we will be able to help you select a cutting-edge topic for your PhD project so that you can engage in meaningful research
from the first year of the programme. Many of our PhD students start publishing novel results from as early as the
second year of their project.
