associational -- many great filks are based on G&S songs |
Review |
This is the story of how Gilbert and Sullivan come to write The Mikado , after suffering a block because Gilbert [Jim Broadbent] can't think of any original ideas, and because Sullivan [Allan Corduner] wants to write a real opera. The film is a bit slow to get going, but then it is witty and great fun. There are renditions of many famous songs, and not only from The Mikado itself. And a couple of scenes, one of Gilbert rehearsing some actors, and one of Sullivan rehearsing the orchestra, are pure genius. |
