Suggested answer to exercise: VAS stress from the 2005 questionnaire, part 2, 4

Question 4: Approximately what would the variance of VAS stress be and in what units should it be reported?

Suggested answer

The variance is the square of the standard deviation. Variance = 19.12 = 365.

Standard deviation is in the same units as the observations, mm. Hence variance is in the square of the units of the observations, square mm or mm2
