This task is designed to determine whether a particular user can discriminate between a number of similar melodies. Furthermore, it is possible to tell whether an individual loses awareness of both pitch order and rhythmical pattern as the questions become complex, or whether they retain one of the components more clearly than the other.

A test melody of two bars is presented using one voice. The specimens are either:

• Identical to the test
• Identical to the test in pitch only
• Identical to the test in rhythm only
• Not identical to the test in either pitch or rhythm

Subsequent questions increase bar length to four and eight bars, with the number of voices increasing to two and finally three.
