Histotech team

Histotech staff have a wide range of experience in all aspects of histology. Some of our key members are listed below - click on the arrows to find out more.

Jenny Southgate

Background

Professor Jenny Southgate founded Histotech with Dr Simon Baker in 2008.  Jenny remains Director of the Jack Birch Unit which is sponsored by York Against Cancer.

Jenny began her career at the Imperial Cancer Research Fund (ICRF) in London, where she obtained a degree from the Institute of Biology, followed by a PhD from the University of Leeds. She moved to Leeds in 1990, where she headed a research group based in the ICRF Cancer Medicine Research Unit at St James's University Hospital, University of Leeds.

Interests

Her research interests encompass the cell/molecular biology of human epithelial tissues and their cancers, and have primarily focused on the urothelium of the urinary bladder. She is also developing strategies to restore bladder function following trauma or disease (including cancer) using tissue engineering and biomaterials.

Jenny is a Deputy Director of the White Rose Centre for Industrial Collaboration in Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering (BITE CIC), which is funded by Yorkshire Forward.

These interests have led Jenny to use a wide range of histological techniques in her research and she founded Histotech to address the unmet need for high-quality histology in the field of tissue engineering.

Dr Amy Glover

Background

Amy studied at the University of Otago, New Zealand were she gained a BSc (Hons) in Anatomy and a PhD in Reproductive Biology.   She has since completed post-doctoral projects into prognostic gene signatures in human melanoma, the role of alveolar macrophages in homeostasis and infection, and the commercial use of DNA as a molecular marker.

Interests

Amy joined Histotech in August 2011 and is responsible for the design, execution and management of projects.

Simon Baker

Background

Simon did both his graduate BSc degree and PhD at the University of York. He has previously held a Yorkshire Enterprise Fellowship and a Royal Society of Edinburgh/BBSRC Enterprise Fellowship. During his time as an Enterprise Fellow, Simon and Prof Southgate started Histotech to address the unmet needs of the tissue engineering field for high-quality histology.

Interests

Before starting Histotech, Simon's academic research focussed on promoting differentiated tissue function in vitro using ligand-driven and biomaterial-guided approaches.

Marie Fleming

Background

Marie joined Histotech in August 2010 and provides administrative support for all of Histotech's projects.
